The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Russian media from October 2 to 4

From October 2 to 4, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading Russian media outlets to find out how the Russian media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The following media outlets were monitored: “Lenta ru”, “Gazeta ru”, “Kommersant”, “Regnum”, and “TASS”.

“Lenta.ru” published 70 articles, 19 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 34 of the Armenian side, 17 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 8 out of 17 materials are neutral, 5 are pro-Armenian, 4 are pro-Azerbaijani.

“Gazeta ru” published 121 articles, 24 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 58 of the Armenian side, 39 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 27 out of 39 materials are neutral, 7 are pro-Armenian, 5 are pro-Azerbaijani.

“TASS” published 129 articles, 42 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 56 of the Armenian side, 31 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 21 out of 31 materials are neutral, 5 are pro-Armenian, 5 are pro-Azerbaijani.

“Kommersant” published 64 articles, 19 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 22 of the Armenian side, 23 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 19 out of 23 materials are neutral, 1 is pro-Armenian, 3 are pro-Azerbaijani.

“Regnum” published 117 articles, 16 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 56 of the Armenian side, 45 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 34 out of 45 materials are neutral, 6 is pro-Armenian, 5 are pro-Azerbaijani.

According to the press, Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov, referring to the recent escalation of the Artsakh conflict, noted that he is sure that Armenia has not started the attack.

The statement of Emanuel Macron was published in the press, according to which the latter will demand an explanation from Ankara for moving terrorist groups to the Artsakh border.

The Russian press also published the statement of the President of the European Council Charles Michel, according to which Turkey’s intervention in the Artsakh issue only worsens the situation.
