The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Russian media on November 5

On November 5, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading Russian media outlets to find out how the Russian media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The following media outlets were monitored: “Lenta ru”, “Gazeta ru”, “Ria Novosti”, “Regnum”, and “TASS”.

“Lenta.ru” published 8 articles, 4 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 4 of the Armenian side.

“Gazeta ru” published 9 articles, 3 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 2 of the Armenian side, 4 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. All 4 publications were of a neutral character.

“Ria Novosti” published 27 articles, 7 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 16 of the Armenian side, 4 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. All 4 publications were of a neutral character.

“TASS” published 11 articles, 5 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 4 of the Armenian side, were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. Both were of a neutral character.

“Regnum” published 21 articles, 8 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 8 of the Armenian side, 5 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 3 out of 5 materials are neutral, 2 are pro-Armenian, none is pro-Azerbaijani.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated at a briefing that the transfer of jihadist militants from the Middle East to Nagorno-Karabakh could turn into formation of a terrorist enclave in the Caucasus. According to Russian media, Zakharova once again confirmed that the Russian Foreign Ministry has information that Azerbaijan has transferred terrorists to Artsakh to take part in the fighting.

According to one of the analyses, the presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkey, waging a joint war in Karabakh, have created a nationalist spirit in their countries, which has ceased to be fed by victorious speeches from the battlefronts. In Ankara and Baku, the system of “optimistic predictions and aspirations” collapses, which, in its turn, acquires a broader geopolitical context.

According to the daily, former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has strongly criticized the Turkish President, saying “Erdogan is a greater threat to the world than the coronavirus pandemic”.
