The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Russian media on October 26

On October 26, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading Russian media outlets to find out how the Russian media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The following media outlets were monitored: “Lenta ru”, “Gazeta ru”, “Ria Novosti”, “Regnum”, and “TASS”.

“Lenta.ru” published 15 articles, 4 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 9 of the Armenian side, 2 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts․ 1 out of 2 materials is neutral, 1 is pro-Armenian, none is pro-Azerbaijani.

“Gazeta ru” published 31 articles, 6 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 13 of the Armenian side, 12 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 11 out of 12 materials are neutral, 1 is pro-Armenian, none is pro-Azerbaijani.

“Ria Novosti” published 46 articles, 16 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 20 of the Armenian side, 10 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 8 out of 10 materials are neutral, 2 are pro-Armenian, none is pro-Azerbaijani.

“TASS” published 26 articles, 6 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 11 of the Armenian side, 9 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts.  All 9 publications were of a neutral character.

“Regnum” published 30 articles, 8 of which were the publications of the Azerbaijani side, 14 of the Armenian side, 8 were calls, statements of different countries and structures, as well as comments of state officials and experts. 6 out of 8 materials are neutral, 1 is pro-Armenian, 1 is pro-Azerbaijani.

Freestyle wrestler, European champion Arsen Harutyunyan has left for Nagorno-Karabakh. He commented on his decision to go to the front: “I am an Armenian, I must defend my homeland if there is a need for it.”

One of the Russian media outlets referred to the topics that appeared in the media of the Catholic world from October 19 to 25, 2020. According to reports, Katolicka Agencja Informacyjna (Warsaw, Poland) writes that Nagorno Karabakh is the last frontier of Christian civilization.

When the war broke out, Bishop Bagrat Galstanyan of the Armenian Apostolic Church visited Stepanakert to provide spiritual support to his compatriots in Artsakh. “This is my homeland, there is no difference between Armenia and Artsakh. The threat to Artsakh is a threat to our existence as Armenians and Christians,” said the bishop.
