The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Foreign media from October 22 to 24

From October 22 to 24, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading foreign media outlets to find out how the foreign media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The websites of the following media outlets were monitored: “BBC”, “CNN”, “Reuters”, “Associated Press” (AP), and “Deutsche Welle” (DW-English version).

The BBC news agency published 3 articles. The news outlet investigated the videos the killing of Armenian prisoners of war by the soldiers of Azerbaijani Special Forces. The BBC spoke to a former British military intelligence officer who noted he sees no reason to believe the video was fake, despite the fact that the Azerbaijani side was trying to prove it to be fake after actively distributing the video: “These are real bullets, this is a real killing. This is genuine, and I don’t see any reason to assume it’s staged.”

CNN news agency published 2 video reports․ One of them presents the interview of Armenian FM Zohrab Mnatsakanyan to CNN program “Amanpour”.

Reuters news agency published 3 articles in the specified monitoring period. The media outlet referred to the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s meeting with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan “in a new attempt to end nearly a month of bloodshed that Russian President Vladimir Putin said may have killed 5,000 people”.

The Associated Press published 5 articles during the specified monitoring period. The news outlet wrote that Nagorno-Karabakh fighting continues despite US mediation. According to the media outlet, heavy fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh continued with Armenia and Azerbaijan trading blame for new attacks, hostilities that raised the threat of Turkey and Russia being drawn into the conflict.
