The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Foreign media from October 1 to 4

From October 1 to 4, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading foreign media outlets to find out how the foreign media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The websites of the following media outlets were monitored: “BBC”, “CNN”, “Reuters”, “Associated Press” (AP), and “Deutsche Welle” (DW).

The BBC news agency published 10 articles during the specified monitoring period․ The media outlet referred to the standpoints of the conflicting sides. It also prepared a report in which the commentator states: “The world considers Nagorno Karabakh part of Azerbaijan, and yet Armenia controls it”.

CNN news agency published 3 extensive articles in the specified monitoring period, in which the balance is kept. Almost all of the agency’s articles are based on the comments of journalists and analysts representing the conflicting sides, excluding one-sided coverage of the issue.

As we have mentioned in our previous analysis, Reuters news agency is one of those international news outlets which actively covers the Artsakh conflict. It published 30 dozen articles in the specified monitoring period. In numerous informative publications, it referred to the statements of the conflicting sides, as well as to the reaction of international organizations and other states. In particular, the accusation of France against Turkey was published. According to it, the latter was sending Syrian mercenaries to Nagorno Karabakh. The demonstration of the Armenian community in the USA and their call to support Armenia addressed to US President Donald Trump was also published.

The Associated Press published 6 articles during the specified monitoring period. Although the agency tries to present the views of the conflicting sides in its articles. In certain extensive articles one may find assertions confirming the Azerbaijani thesis, particularly on the “occupation” of Azerbaijani territories.

Deutsche Welle news agency published 6 articles in the specified period. In its extensive coverage the leading German media outlet described in detail the history of the conflict, the views of the conflicting sides, noting that they continue to “attack” each other.
