The general picture of the coverage of the Karabakh conflict in the Foreign media from September 27 to 30

From September 27 to 30, 2020, “Media Advocate” initiative monitored the publications of 5 leading foreign media outlets to find out how the foreign media covered the actions unleashed by Azerbaijan. The websites of the following media outlets were monitored: “BBC”, “CNN”, “Reuters”, “Associated Press” (AP), and “Deutsche Welle” (DW).

The BBC news agency published 11 articles during the specified monitoring period. The first extensive coverage of the BBC was published on the first day of the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan. The article titled as “Armenia and Azerbaijan fight over disputed Nagorno-Karabakh” makes a comprehensive reference to the conflict, presenting the views of the conflicting sides.

CNN news agency published 2 extensive articles in the specified monitoring period, which are of analytical nature. According to the analyses, there is a concern that the conflict may go beyond the borders of the region.

Reuters news agency is one of those international news outlets which actively covered the Artsakh conflict. It published 6 dozen articles in the specified monitoring period. The first article refers to the martial law which was declared in Armenia. Reuters has actively published the publications of the conflicting sides, as well as the calls and official statements of the state structures of different countries.

The Associated Press published 7 articles during the specified monitoring period. The articles are of analytical nature and mainly present the history, that is the background of the conflict. In one of the articles, in particular, only the Azerbaijani thesis of the conflict is presented.

Deutsche Welle news agency published 6 articles in the specified mentioned period. It mainly presented the events comprehensively, but in certain articles one may find expressions that are manifestations of the Azerbaijani standpoint. The article of the media outlets that the Syrian mercenaries, in fact, sustain Turkey’s foreign policy is worth mentioning.
