Journalists were banned from entering YSU Board meetings

The Board of Trustees of Yerevan State University voted for the proposal of the Deputy Minister of the Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan to prohibit journalists’ entrance to the meetings of Board of Trustees. This is an actual example of freedom of speech restriction. For a long time now, there is an actual fight against freedom of speech in YSU.

In a conversation with “Media Advocate” initiative, journalist Koryun Simonyan noted that the entrance of journalists was prohibited even to the administrative building of YSU. According to Koryun Simonyan, Varag Siseryan, responsible for the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, also spoke out against the entrance of the journalists, as well as YSU Acting Rector Gegham Gevorgyan, and at that time just a member of the Board of Trustees, Gevorg Muradyan.

The issue of YSU has been in the spotlight of public attention for a long time. Restricting the work of journalists this way did not actually contribute to the principle of transparency, while the issue of public concern remained unresolved.

“Media Advocate” initiative strongly condemns such approaches, which restrict the right of people to receive information and create an artificial obstacle for journalists when conducting their professional work.
